Here's my quilt for the Bloggers Quilt Festival! I've decided to show you the quilt which got me hooked into this wonderful hobby - my very first quilt!
I'd been looking at quilting magazines for ages when I came across an advert for a workshop for beginners. The class was held over 2 days but one month apart. On the first day we learned how to cut the fabric and make a block so we could go away and complete the quilt top. One month later we returned to layer the quilt and use a walking foot to quilt a simple straight line design and bind the edges. It was brilliant!
I remember spending literally hours in the fabric shop choosing my fabrics based on the bright orange walls of the spare room in our house which the children had decided to make into a TV room. These are not my usual colour choices but I love it! The churn dash blocks measure 15 inches and with the sashing and borders the quilt is 72" square and just sits nicely on top of our king sized bed. For the quilting we used invisible thread but this has started to break so I may eventually have to re-quilt it. I think the it's about 14 years old but I didn't add a label so I'm not sure.
The quilt marks the beginning of an obsession which in the last year has developed into a successful quilt teaching business. More importantly it has been responsible for me finding many many good friends and gives me a real sense of satisfaction through stitching creativity. What a wonderful craft this is!
Please spend some time visiting the other blogs featured in the festival - it's such an inspiration to see these wonderful quilt. Many thnks to Amy for hosting this event!

ReplyDeleteA beautiful quilt for a first quilt. I don't think mine was as big and as beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou know what? I don't think I have ever actually seen this quilt in real life. It's amazing what this quilt led to, isn't it?

I love seeing folks' first quilts and seeing how their style changes over the years. Your first quilt is gorgeous! Love the colors. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteFirst quilts are always so special. This one is no exception! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely quilt Hazel. If only I had time to join in, but at the moment it's all a bit frantic. One thing i've found is how difficult it is to get fabric cut accurately. An idea for a days workshop?
