Dresden Delight!

Today I've been practising sewing a Dresden Plate and I'm delighted with the result! I just need to make the centre circle and applique this on a felt background to make a place mat. I chose a charm pack of 'Birdie' fabrics and decided to cut 4½” wedges using the Easy Dresden Ruler:

I was inspired by Kim Walus's pattern 'Plates for Your Table' on Moda Bake Shop but I want the finished plate to fit on a 12" felt square which it will - just! I could cut 2 wedges from each charm square so for one complete plate it needs 10 charm squares. In other words you can make 4 place mats from each pack of charm squares. I love using charm squares because you get a great variety of coordinating fabrics in each little package.

Kim's step by step instructions were brilliant and helped me to chain piece the plate in no time. She has several other projects on Moda Bake Shop and loads of other lovely makes on her blog 'Bitty Bits and Pieces' so head over there and have a browse!

  2. Love your fabrics. It will be a beautiful placemat. I bought the dresden ruler last November and I am having fun with it. I have made candle mats by sewing the plate blades together then put right sides together with another fabricSew arond the outer edges and trim to match the plate. Turning right side out through the center circle, poking out my points, pressing, and then adding the center circle. Darling candle mats or candy dish mats.
    Have fun. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I love the fabrics you are using. I have that ruler, and did once make a lap quilt using it, which my sister has and loves.
